Skin Treatment Definitions

I have started filling in some of the terms and definitions I will be covering on Skin Care Treatment .ca below.
Stay tuned for more information and updates.

Accutane – A prescribed medication used to treat severe acne.

Acoustic Wave Therapy – A non-invasive medispa treatment used to reduce cellulite.

Active FX – A non-invasive laser treatment for the skin that removes or reduces acne scarring.

Affirm Laser Skin Treatment – Affirm is a laser system that is used in spa for wrinkle reduction, treating scars, reducing pigmentation and redness in skin, removing age spots, and anti-aging treatments (rejuvenation and tightening).

Arm lift – The technical term for this is Brachioplasty. The procedure tightens or removes (dependant on the treatment) excess skin from the upper arm.

Artefill – Approved in the United States, this dermal filler is non-absorptive. In other words it doesn’t diminish and is often used as a permanent wrinkle filler. Some physicians use Artefill all over the face, but it is actually used primarily for nasolabial lines (smile lines).

Blue peel – The Blue Peel is an ‘invention’ of the top skin care treatment line by Obagi. Most often used in clinics and spas for blemish prone skin, wrinkles, unwanted pigmentation, scar reduction, large pores and sun damage.

Botulinum toxin – There are two types of botulinum toxin, type A and type B. Botox as they are commonly called, are purified substances that have been derived from bacteria. The function is to block the nerve signals from the brain to the muscle at the point of injection.

Bovine collagen – This substance consists of sterile, purified, and reconstituted collagen from a cow. Bovine collagen is used to restore lost collagen by injection into the dermal layers of your skin.

Brow Lift – Most often performed as plastic surgery, new treatments now exist to lift the brow or forehead with dermal fillers.

Cellulite treatment – Apart from plastic or cosmetic surgery there are many treatments available to reduce the appearance of cellulite under your skin. Just because creams and treatments exist however, doesn’t mean they are all (or any are) effective. If cellulite is a problem for you, please see your physician for a cosmetic surgery referral and consultation.

Cheek augmentation, Cheek lift – Although traditionally a surgical procedure with implants, modern day practice is seeing a surge in dermal fillers to get similar effects.

Chemical peel – Many peels exist that remove the top (or more) layers of your skin. One of the finest chemical peels is from the Obagi line (personal opinion) but your medi-spa may have their favorites to recommend. If my memory is correct my first peel was a Physician’s Formula peel – in the clinic and administred by a registered nurse trained by the medical doctor. My facial skin peeled and flaked for about a week and continued to improve for approximately a month after. Six months later I could still see that my pores were much smaller and I had fewer breakouts.

Chin implants – See Cheek augmentation and lifts, above.

Collagen – A naturally occuring fibrous protein. The purpose of collagen is to form a connective tissue that supports skin, bone, tendons, and cartilage. Collagen is the glue that holds tissues together and helps to maintain the integrity of their structure.
